"today in the bay'" christie smith is live with all the latest details. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you and happy friday. it certainly seems odd to arson investigators, and that is three separate fires that started within an hour and they were just a couple of blocks from each other. two of them happened at the same strip mall where we are at this morning. i wanted to show you this wall here. kind of hard to see but it's blackened on one side. that goes all the way up into the eaves of this building, it's a strip mall. if steve can pan over in the darkness, there's also a tree that caught fire and that goes down the hill onto the main street. we are on sycamore. now, when police arrived around 10:40 last night, they saw a huge orange glow in the sky and thought the back of the mall was on fire.
5:02 am
firefighters arrived and found big flames in the grass and trees nearby. it's not just one area, but two areas of the mall on the southeast and north side. one of them behind a 99 cent store. an hour earlier, less than a quarter of a mile away at 18th and l streets by antioch high school, reports of a tree on fire there. again, these are so close, a dispatcher told me that this is all under investigation. but they told us earlier that it certainly looked suspicious and at this point looks like arson. reporting live in antioch, christie smith, "today in the bay." in the middle east this morning, egypt's president is telling his countrymen that it's part of their islamic duty to protect the embassies and guests in his country. his comments come as more protests are expected today over a low-budget film that many muslims see as an open insult to the prophet muhammed. the u.s. has sent fbi officials to follow up on the deaths of chris stevens and three others.

disturbing findings. firefighters now say yesterday's fire at beechwood school on terminal avenue was a bigger problem than it actually should have been because the building was not equipped with a monitored fire alarm or even a sprinkler system. that building was actually a temporary structure and is not required to have such a system, but firefighters say if it did, they may have been able to put the fire out a lot faster. our camera was there as that blaze burned for more than two hours, causing $300,000 in damage. classes have been cancelled for today and administrators are now hoping to reopen that school on monday. well, suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi has lost another round in his battle to keep his job. the san francisco ethics commission has now rejected his request to delay sending his case to the board of supervisors after the november election. the commission hopes to submit the documents to the board by tuesday. the supervisors will then use the findings to determine if mirkarimi should be fired in the wake of a domestic violence
